BENAMOR-GOLF COURSE
BENAMOR-GOLF COURSE.
To return to the homepage for east-west-algarve.comThe picture above shows the view from the terrace outside the clubhouse. It was a boiling hot afternoon,in fact the thermometer in Conceicao showed 41 degrees celsius at six oclock in the evening. We sat on the terrace photographing a family of ducks and partaking of a lovely cold pint of lager.
This lovely golf course can compete with any golf course in Europe, both for the quality of the golf and the beauty of its situation
You approach the golf course on the N125 both from Spain in one direction and from Faro airport in the other. You cannot miss it really as it is situated on a roundabout with a statue of a golfer in the middle.Coming from the Spanish direction take the third turning left off the roundabout and from Faro take the first turning left.
You progress straight onto a private road belonging to the golf course. You immediately appear to be in open countryside.Gently rolling hills and mature trees surround you as soon as you pass through the gateway.
For some reason I had expected to see the clubhouse straightaway but not the case. You have a walk or drive of roughly a kilometre before you arrive at the lovely headquarters.
It really is a very pleasant setting low down amongst the rolling hills. The buildings are surrounded by water features and of course the first and last holes.
The first thing I noticed was the friendliness of everybody we met.Having walked here on foot (wheelchair in my case) we called into the reception to make sure they did not mind us walking around and taking photographs.Since it was a very hot sunny day at the end of june we wanted to know we could get a drink as well. The receptionist was very pleasant and answered yes,yes and yes to our questions. So we were set for a couple of very pleasurable hours enjoying all that BENAMOR had to offer.Except the golf of course.I find it a little difficult swinging clubs out of the wheelchair.
So what do we know factually about BENAMOR-GOLF.

FACILITIES
There are a superb range of facilities:Reception,Restaurant,Golf shop,Bar,Caddy Master,Changing Rooms,Driving Range ,2 putting greens and Buggy Bar.
The course was opened in the year 2000 and the designer was Sir Henry Cotton. It is an 18 hole par 71 and has White,Red and Yellow courses. It has fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains of Serra do Caldeirao. The desaigner deliberately left in every mature tree he possibly could, creating a great atmosphere for the whole course. These trees create a lot of the difficulty involved with your drives, you need to get to know the course to know where you need to land that ball on the fairway.Great accuracy as well as knowledge create the difficulty and the fast growing reputation of this course.
BENAMOR-GOLF.Above photograph is just before you come to the clubhouse. Here we chatted to a golfer who new the course very well.He told us it can be quite a testing 18 holes. He said many fairways need very precise placement,if you do not get this right, what you think is a good drive can end up leaving you in all kinds of trouble.

BENAMOR-GOLF .Above photograph shows a lovely old chuch which is directly behind the clubhouse. It led us to wonder if there had been a small village here at one time.I cannot imagine golfers going to mass before they do their round of golf. Not even a hundred years ago.It does lend a magical atmosphere to the area.Apparently it is not in use nowadays but is very impressive inside.
Whilst sat on the terrace we were constantly amused by a family of ducks who kept walking past in single file. They looked for "all the world" like a family out for a sunday afternoon stroll.Mum at the front and dad bringing up the rear making sure not of the kids gets lost.
Of course this terrace in front of the clubhouse looks straight onto the 18th hole and the 1st tee is insight to your left.< br />
I must say everything including the greens etc looked absolutely impecable,I think most golfers would be more than happy with this course. This was a wednesday afternoon and the place looked deserted but in fact this was far from the case.It turned out people were drifting in at a steady pace and they were coming in as well.We had a chat with the barman who said considering the economic climate,"they could be doing a lot worse".They had quite a good menu including English breakfast but sales of meals has taken a bit of a hit.Staff were ovbviously kept to a minimum but from what we saw the hands on grounds men must be more than adequate.Everything looked perfect to me.
This pleasant little scene is actually a small waterfall feature close to the clubhouse.I apologise that i cannot go around the course itself taking photographs.Hopefully you get a good impression of the place from my words and the pictures.
One day I will try and bribe somebody to drive me around the golf course itself so I can do photographs and describe all the holes around the course. They had electric buggies so you never know.I do have my own electric wheelchair but it is the smallest lightest one on the market so probably would not get me around the grassy and steep slopes there might be.I have some more photographs of BENAMOR-GOLF to come in the next few days.
In the meantime you golfers who go abroad maybe one day you might want to visit this lovely golf course. We have two top class apartments we can rent out to golfers just minutes walk from BENAMOR-GOLF course.See them on the blue buttons to your left.
Another little scene next to BENAMOR-GOLF clubhouse.I do apologise that because of my lacerated right leg I cannot get around the course taking shots you golfers would want to see.
However I reckon if I show them the free publicity they are getting,I might be able to get a buggy ride around the course. In the meantime you have to put up with photographs around the clubhouse. The shot above shows a giant orange Canna plant.Ok,I know you could not give a sh-t but it is a little education for you. When you do go to BENAMOR-GOLF you can impress everybody by saying loudly to everyone within earshot "Look at that giant Canna plant. They do not grow like that in England".They will either look at you with a new found respect for your amazing knowledge,or be muttering under their breath "ar-eh-le"
I mentioned before that Sir henry Cotton left many trees in to help test you golfers and many of them have grown into considerable obstacles of great girth. For those interested in the fauna, you will find trees of Olive,Cork oak,Carob,Fig and Almond. These varied species are a great part of the beauty and atmosphere of BENAMOR-GOLF.The greens I understand are superb Penn A4 and the fairways are Bermuda Sahara and cool season grasses which I am told provide good lies for both wood and iron shots. They certainly seem to know their business here!
Below some shots of mature trees you will see at BENAMOR-GOLF
As I said before I cannot get out onto the golf course but we understand that mature trees were preserved whenever possible, when designing BENAMOR-GOLF.So the above pictuire was taken from the tarmac roadway. Can you imagine how old that tree is and imagine it as an obstacle blocking your view and your shot to the green.I understand what the chap meant when he said you need to know exactly where to put the ball and extreme accuracy being needed.Add to this the manmade obstacles of water and sand bunkers and I think I can understand why this beautifull course is growing in reputation.
Below you will see an itinerary of the tournaments coming up in 2011 and you will see it is a fairly heavy schedule.
